– System designed with domestic technology and tailored to Korea’s wind patterns, with a utilization rate above 30%
– Blade length of 100 meters, rotor diameter of 205 meters, and more than 70% of parts made locally
The 8 MW offshore wind power system (DS205-8MW) from Doosan Enerbility was chosen as a “Next Generation World-Class Product,” the company announced on November 10.
The term “Korea World-Class Products” refers to a program designed to boost exports from South Korea that includes goods and businesses that have been approved as world-class by the Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE). The products fall into one of two categories: “World-Class Products,” which are defined as those that rank among the top five globally in terms of market share and have a share of at least five percent of the market; or “Next Generation World-Class Products,” which are goods that are judged to have the potential to rank among the top five within the next seven years.
Developed using domestic Korean technology, Doosan’s 8MW offshore wind generation plant has previously completed a demonstration project and received international certification. A Next Generation World-Class Product, Doosan’s offshore wind turbine is highly regarded for its anticipated future contribution to the industry. The wind turbine was specifically made for the Korean climate, which has far slower wind speeds than in Europe, the home of offshore wind power development. In order to enable the wind turbine to be operated even in situations when the average wind speed is 6.5 m/s, the diameter** of the rotor was extended to 205 meters (blade length: 100 meters). This allowed for the recording of a utilization rate exceeding 30 percent. * Achieved UL Type Certification in 2022. ** The diameter of the circle that the turbine blade tip draws is referred to as the rotor diameter. Higher power generating efficiency results from a blade’s bigger surface area for gathering wind when its diameter is longer.
Hongook Park, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group, stated, “The recently selected 8MW offshore wind power system is a product that was developed as a state-led project. We completed the design and manufacturing of the main components, such as the blade and generator, with Korea’s local technology.” “As almost 70% of the components are made locally, we intend to aggressively pursue additional market expansion in order to generate more jobs throughout the Korean wind power industry,” he continued.
During the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas on November 9, the “World-Class Product Certificate Award Ceremony 2023” took place.
